In the early 1970s, Csikszentmihalyi developed the Experience Sampling Method (ESM), a set of techniques designed to capture people’s behaviors, thoughts, and feelings as they occur. The happiness, he avers, lies in the challenge to transcend beyond one’s previous level of skills. Whether in creative arts, athletics, work, or spiritual practice, flow leads to a deep motivation to excel and triumph over limitation, he says. ![]() Building on years of detailed research, Csikszentmihalyi created the term “flow” to describe the experience of being completely immersed in an activity for its own sake. The nearest I let myself approach sci fi normally is watching Matt Groening’s Futurama.īut to broaden my horizons I trekked to the science fiction store in downtown Melbourne only to find that most of their stock had been moved to a comic festival on at the same time on the other side of town. Not that I wouldn’t enjoy it, but I find it would be too easy for me to lock the door to my apartment, buy a pair of Vulcan ears and play online multi-players until I’m featured as a cautionary tale on a Current Affairs program. I have to admit I’ve always shied away from reading science fiction in the past. Perhaps with the rise of e-publishing, we’ll see a return to the short story form. ![]() These were often a way for writers to make money, but that didn’t mean those writers didn’t also fiercely believe in the validity of what they were writing as well. ![]() Eons ago, short stories once roamed the Earth in pulp sci-fi publications. Okay, I know my last post was in defence of the New Yorker and I adore that publication and the short stories it promotes, but I wanted to read around and see what else the short story offered, over brutal, grinding realism. I want to write about this story immediately. (Yes, I’m sitting in Starbucks, and yes, I’m drinking a latte, but you could have probably guessed that part anyway). Wow, I’ve just finished reading this and have just put it down. ![]() ![]() This process, in turn, drives the body to store fat. ![]() The human body secretes insulin in response to the consumption of carbohydrates in order to regulate blood sugar. The shortage of college-educated men is not just a big-city phenomenon frustrating women in New York and L.A. Two, knowledge is power, so here’s what to do about it. It’s a fascinating, if sobering read, with two critical takeaways: One, it’s not you. Using a combination of demographics, statistics, game theory, and number-crunching, Date-onomics tells what every single, college-educated, heterosexual, looking-for-a-partner woman needs to know: The “man deficit” is real. So why not have some fun? You might be punished, but that doesn’t matter. Mortal consequences are trivial when compared to the immortal salvation his soul will receive. It means that Robert has absolutely no one to answer to on this earth. Now this is a terribly dangerous mind-set. History has already been written: his soul has already been saved. He already has a free ticket into to heaven, so whatever he does on earth doesn’t matter. ![]() Robert opened the doors when he accepted the Calvinist principle of predestination he believes himself to be one of God’s elect. That’s all there in the text, but it is only the beginning. The novel can be read as a didactical message about the dangers of a sinful mind. The prince of destruction dominates his mind and controls his actions. Robert, our sinner, has been claimed by Satan. Perhaps the most obvious interpretation to start with is the religious angle. I shall try to tell you why this book is so utterly excellent. The narrative is so dense that it is impossible to make a solid interpretation of the events, but I shall try. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Doris lessing the golden![]() ![]() This quote shows Anna choosing to reject shame and actively be proud of her unconventional life. ![]() The reference to Mother Sugar implies that the two women wrestle with emotional responses such as shame or guilt in relation to their personal choices to live unconventional lives.
